Fence Post Back Bookshelf

Saw this pallet backed bookshelf over at and really liked it.  So, I set out to try and make one....with the help of hubby.
I didn't have a pallet, but I did have fence posts that were used in my yard to help stop water run off.  They have been in the ground for a couple of years, but it was time to get them up and do something else to help with the water running down the hill.  Instead of trashing the fence posts, I could use them for the backside.  Found that termites and bugs had pretty much damaged the part that was in the ground.  Couldn't use most of them.  But after a good scrubbing, letting them air dry, some were very useable.
I wanted to make this as a place for the grandchildren to put toys.  Vertical space is prime real estate, especially in a small house.  It seemed like the perfect solution, to get toys off the floor and out of baskets. To use those old fence posts and make something unique and very functional makes me happy.
First, I went to Big Lots and bought a tall book shelf.  I didn't use the piece that is used for the back.  Originally, I was going to cut the pieces horizontal, just like in the picture I was copying.  But, vertically, they fit perfect and there was no need for cutting.
I really like. I like it so much, I am going to buy a smaller shelf and put it right beside the tall one.  :)
